After gaining independence, Slovakia's primary foreign policy goal was integration into Western political and economic structures. After a period of political consolidation, the country embarked on a path of accelerated reforms.
This process culminated in 2004, a landmark year when Slovakia joined both NATO (March) and the European Union (May). Further integration followed with entry into the Schengen Area in 2007 and the adoption of the Euro as its official currency on January 1, 2009.
Economically, Slovakia has transformed into a modern market economy, becoming a major European hub for automotive manufacturing. The capital, Bratislava, has emerged as a thriving business and tech center. The nation continues to balance its industrial strengths and modernization with the preservation of its unique cultural heritage and traditions.
